SHOW OUR LOCAL CHILDREN YOU CARE.

When Marisela’s three-year-old son Erick was diagnosed with autism, she couldn’t believe it.

While Marisela knew Erick had speech issues and wasn’t potty-trained like other children his age, he didn’t act like children she knew who had autism.

After understanding Erick’s autism was on the milder end of the spectrum, her disbelief quickly became determination and she focused on getting her son the support he would need to succeed.

Erick’s doctor recommended Head Start.

Marisela turned to our Matrix Human Services Head Start Program.

The first day Erick arrived, he was still in diapers and was not talking. He had trouble sitting at the table with his classmates for activities and meals. He had difficulty focusing.

With the help of his teacher, Erick began to follow a routine. He soon could participate in group activities and learned how to use the toilet. Over time, he excelled and became the first in his class who mastered reciting the entire alphabet and had a good understanding of phonics.

Marisela could see him advancing at home as well. Erick’s teacher worked with Marisela on strategies they developed in the classroom that she could reinforce at home. For example, they discovered if Erick was allowed to hold a “sensory item,” like a bean bag, it helped him focus more on what was being requested of him.

“I would recommend Matrix Head Start to anyone,” said Marisela. “I am so grateful for Erick’s experiences. Although his teachers are not therapists, they are attentive and supportive. That dedication is really helping him learn. I feel comfortable leaving my son at Matrix Head Start every day because I know they truly care for his well-being and Erick will receive the help he needs.”

Marisela knows the reason Erick is doing so well is due to the positive environment and experiences he is having at Matrix Head Start!

Our Head Start Disability Department provides wrap-around support to babies and toddlers who require a little more of our love and attention. Unfortunately, resources and supplies for our children with special needs are not completely covered in our funding. Training educators working with nonverbal and traumatized children is crucial.

We’ve truly appreciated your support. Seeing our current need, will you consider making a monetary gift to improve the services for these children?

We wish we had the additional resources needed to help more children like Erick realize their full potential. With your assistance, we can ensure all of our children receive the proper equipment, support and care needed to thrive.

Kim Cares is dedicated to these children and has committed to matching your first monetary gift through January 30th, 2019!

Now, we need YOU! Please consider donating $200 that will then double to $400 through our match to help more children like Erick.

On behalf of the thousands of children and families we work with every day, Thank you.
