HUNDREDS GATHER FOR WALK to fight poverty ON RIVERFRONT
Hike from the heart provides fun for all

DETROIT, July 15, 2014, 2014 – Matrix Human Services is gearing up for their 3rd Annual Hike from the Heart 5K Walk to be held Saturday, August 9, 2014 along the Detroit Riverwalk located at 1340 Atwater in Downtown Detroit from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Hike from the Heart proceeds benefit Matrix’s Transition to Success program, which is a poverty rehabilitation model, implemented across all Matrix programs, that coordinates care for basic needs, teaches participants to read (including GED and higher education), financial literacy and volunteerism.  Last year, the non-profit welcomed more than 300 walkers raising over $194,000. This year, they will strive to double fundraising efforts to reach a goal of $300,000.00 by matching funds for teams raising money for other non-profits.

“We are very excited to provide a funds match for this year’s 5k walk,” says Dr.Marcella Wilson, Matrix Human Services, CEO. “As we strive to end poverty, we look forward to donating to other great causes with this partnership.”

Matrix Human Services is pleased to continue their partnership with the Detroit Pistons for the second year. In this role, the Pistons will recognize 75-100 volunteers as Pistons Game Changers. This honor will include pistons tickets and a game changer package that includes tickets, parking passes, and vouchers. In addition, the Piston’s mascot, Hooper, will be on hand to energize the crowd.  The Walk also features live entertainment, prizes, and food.

Other 2014 Sponsors include: Ford Motor Company Fund, Platinum Equity, Lear Corporation, Bosch, The Detroit Riverfront, University of Phoenix, Magneti Marelli, Faurecia, Blue Cross Blue Shield/Blue Care Network.

This year, Matrix is inviting other non-profits to participate and raise funds for their causes.  Non-profits are encouraged to create their own teams and “mini-walk”, while leaving the coordination and logistics to Matrix.  Each non-profit will receive their own fundraising page and all funds they raise go directly to them.

“We are looking have a greater impact and have decided to assist other non-profits with raising funds,” says Wilson.  “There’s so much work to be done and so many worthy causes, that we decided to open the walk up and provide a solid platform.”
