Matrix Head Start Continues to Serve Families At Home While School is Closed

Matrix Human Services Head Start Program is the largest Head Start Program in the city of Detroit as well as throughout the state. When schools closed across Michigan on March 16th due to COVID-19, Head Start closed as well, resulting in families spending more time at home with their children, but unsure how to continue their child\’s education.

Under the direction of Matrix Human Services Head Start Program Director, Cristal Claussen, Matrix Family Advocates remained in touch with families while resources were added to our website including a calendar with learning activities, as well as educational videos, learning tools, and more.

We also started a Birth-to-Five parent newsletter, to specifically engage our parents at home.

Our Home School Connection Calendar also made it easier for parents to check the calendar for daily activities they can do with their children at home.

To help parents explain to children what is happening, we also included tips on how to communicate a major change using the E.A.S.Y. method.
