local non-profit SEEKS individuals and corporations to organize diaper drives to help head start families

DETROIT, December 18, 2014 – Looking for a unique way to give back this holiday season? One local non-profit is seeking individuals and corporations to host a diaper drive while challenging other corporations and individual to do the same. Matrix Human Services, a 108 year not for profit runs the largest head start program in the City of Detroit serving more than 1,900 children and their families. Federal guidelines prohibit Head Start families from bringing diapers to the program. Therefore, Matrix is reaching to community partners asking everyone to donate or host a diaper drive to help.

“Matrix supporters are second to none.  That’s why we’re turning to them with our Diaper Drive Challenge.  We are encouraging corporations and individuals to get involved and challenge others to beat their record.  On a weekly basis, we go through 7,000 diapers.  Needless to say, our diaper supply has diminished quickly especially since we expanded to 22 centers with an expected thirty centers being open by 2015,” said Debra Spring, Director of Head Start, Matrix Human Services.

Matrix Head Start is a federally funded, comprehensive program serving low-income children zero to five as well as special needs children and their families. As a trilingual, multicultural program, MHS is sensitive to the cultural differences, strengths and uniqueness of our community and teaches in three languages English, Spanish and Arabic. The multifaceted program approach includes training opportunities, shared facilities, extensive community partnerships and engagements that establish Matrix as an authority in early childhood education and childcare.

“It takes one person to take the lead.  The rest is easy.  We will even provide you with a flyer to distribute to your team. It’s a pressure free way to give back and the best part, it doesn’t require a lot of time. If you can’t host a drive, please pick up a couple of packs of diapers the next time you’re at the store and drop them off. We appreciate your support,” Spring continues.

Donations can be delivered to Matrix Head Start located at 2051 Rosa Parks Blvd. in Detroit Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you have questions or need to arrange a pickup for large donations, please contact Barb Lewis at 313.962.5255 ext. 1606. While all sizes are needed, larger sizes are in great demand (4, 5 or 6).  Matrix Head Start will be closed December 24th, 25th and 26th for the holidays.
